Common Foot Injuries in Pickleball

Pickleball’s rapid rise in popularity has also brought an increase in foot and ankle injuries among players. Quick pivots, sudden lunges, and rapid stops put significant stress on the feet, often leading to plantar fasciitis, ankle sprains, and Achilles tendon ruptures. The Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel, is especially vulnerable during explosive movements causing tears or ruptures. Strains of the peroneal tendons along the outside of the ankle or stress fractures of the metatarsals in the forefoot may result from repetitive pounding on hard surfaces. Mild sprains or bruising can impact stability, making it harder to push off, jump, or change direction. Yoga Stretches to Improve Ankle Mobility

Strong and flexible ankles are essential for balance and stability, and yoga offers excellent stretches to enhance mobility. Standing on tiptoes strengthens the calves and improves control, while tree pose, or standing tall on one leg with hands reaching toward the sky, challenges balance and ankle stability. Awkward pose, or sitting back into an invisible chair with arms extended forward, builds strength in the lower legs, and squats help increase ankle flexibility and range of motion. Practicing these poses regularly can reduce stiffness and prevent injuries during daily activities or sports. Stretching the Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.

Risks and Causes of MTP Joint Pain

The toes are connected to the long bones of the foot with metatarsophalangeal, or MTP,  joints. These joints are essential for balance and forward motion while walking. Pain in this area, most often in the big toe, develops when the joint is exposed to excess stress, poor alignment, or conditions that cause inflammation. Common causes include bunions, turf toe, and certain forms of arthritis like gout, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. MTP joint problems can lead to swelling, stiffness, and tenderness that make it difficult to walk or stand comfortably. Risk factors include chronic inflammatory disease and foot or leg misalignment. Wearing shoes that lack adequate support or place pressure on the toes, such as high heels or narrow footwear, are other factors. A podiatrist can assess the underlying cause and provide effective treatment to reduce pain and improve alignment. What Causes Toe Pain?

What Is Lipedema?

Lipedema is a chronic condition characterized by abnormal fat accumulation, primarily in the ankles, legs, hips, and sometimes arms. It often affects women and can lead to disproportionate swelling or a column-like appearance in the lower body. Symptoms include tenderness, pain, bruising easily, and a feeling of heaviness in the affected areas. The condition can be mistaken for obesity, but it is not caused by poor diet or lack of exercise. The exact cause of lipedema is unclear, although hormonal changes, genetics, and inflammation are believed to play roles. It typically develops or worsens during periods of hormonal fluctuations, such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. Treatment options for lipedema include compression therapy, lymphatic drainage, and liposuction in more severe cases. A podiatrist can help manage the discomfort by recommending custom compression garments to improve mobility and providing care for any related foot or leg issues. Swollen feet are a common ailment among pregnant women and people who stand or sit for extended periods. Aging may increase the possibility of swollen feet and patients who are obese often notice when their feet are swelling too. There may be medical reasons why swollen feet occur:

  • Phlebitis - A condition that causes the veins to become inflamed and can also cause leg pain.
  • Liver disease - This may lead to low blood levels of albumin which is a protein. This can cause fluid in the blood to pass into the tissues and several areas of the body can become swollen.
  • Heart failure - When the heart doesn’t pump properly the blood that is normally pumped back to the heart can pool in the veins of the legs causing swollen feet.
  • Kidney disease - One of the main functions of the kidneys is releasing excess fluid in the body. This type of condition can make it difficult for the kidneys to function properly, and as a result the feet may become swollen.
  • Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT)- This is a serious condition where blood clots form in the veins of the legs. They can block the return of blood from the legs to the heart which may cause the feet to swell. It is important to be treated by a podiatrist if this condition is present.

Swollen feet can also be caused by bone and tendon conditions, including fractures, arthritis, and tendinitis. Additionally, there may be skin and toenail conditions and an infection may cause the feet to swell. Patients who take medicine to treat high blood pressure may be prone to getting swollen feet. 

Many patients elevate their feet to help relieve the swelling and this is generally a temporary remedy. When a podiatrist is consulted the reason behind the swelling can be uncovered and subsequently treated.
